The story goes that there once was a witch with magnificent power. She was a benevolent soul to start with but then she encountered the human race. Very few humans were genuinely kind to her so she began to build up a wall around her heart. If a human came to visit her it was usually to ask her to grant some desire of theirs. She had a need for the goods that the humans sold, a girl has to eat you know, so she granted all wishes. Magic always comes at a cost and while she had devised a system so she could get paid in a way that would retain her energy humans began to demand more from her. The more they demanded the higher her price. It was always just business.
One day a powerful man came to see her. He begged for her to save his unborn child. She told him she would do her best, she had a soft spot for children and warned him that all magic comes at a price. He said he was willing to pay any price and so she went to his castle, for he was a king. She met with the Queen and examined her. The witch noticed that both the Queen and her baby were dying and she went to work. She had many books in which she consulted searching for a way to save both of them, determined that a child still have its mother. No matter where she searched she could not find a way to save both the mother and the child. She spoke with the Queen about what she had found. The Queen was adamant that if only one of them could live it must be her child. The witch raised her arms ready to perform a spell and asked if she was sure. After the Queen confirmed this the witch performed the spell.
A few weeks later the Queen went into labor and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The King was overjoyed, at first. You see, the Queen never told her husband about the discussion she had with the witch. As he watched his wife die the King became enraged. He came threateningly towards the witch who was present at the birth to ensure the baby survived, which was the Queen’s greatest wish. The witch was confused about why the King was angry. She had assumed that the Queen would tell him what had transpired that day. Magic always comes at a price. In his anger, he threw the witch into the dungeon and swore she would never see the light of day again.
The witch sat in her cell feeling disbelief and anger. The King had come to HER for help. He only ever asked that she save his child. She had done as he and the Queen asked and saved their son. A few days had passed when the guard came to retrieve her from her cell. She was pensive as she followed him up the stairs into the throne room. She lifted her eyes to those of the King as he spoke. The witch then became enraged as the King demanded more of her. She refused to do any more for the King. She had told him that all magic comes at a price. Unhappy with her answer the King sentenced her to a cruel death. He ordered his guards to prepare a pyre and burn the witch alive.
The witch smirked at the King and informed him that he would live to regret this. She vowed to never help humankind again. As the pyre was finished an angry crowd had gathered around it demanding for the witch’s death. They too blamed her for the Queen’s death and demanded retribution. The guards secured her to the wood and once they were sure she could not escape lit her on fire. Drawing her power from the heat of the fire the witch cast a spell. This spell freed her from her doom and cursed all the humans near her. Their children would be cursed with magic some of their powers would be helpful, some not so much.
Overtime the curse spread which leads us to today where none are spared from its reach. A few generations after ours no one will know that it wasn’t normal to have powers.
